Reimu Hakurei of the Hakurei Shrine just confirmed that she don't know the identity of her shrine's god.
When asked about the identity of the god of the Hakurei shrine, she admits to not knowing the identity of the god enshrined in the shrine.
"Does it matter? This is a shrine, and gods are enshrined in shrines, so there is definitely a god in this shrine." Said Reimu. "The shrine is built here to protect the barrier between Gensokyo and the Outside World, but I don't know if a god is really necessary for that."
Of course it is necessary. The Great Hakurei Border is build using divine power. Like everything else in Gensokyo, faith keeps the barrier in existence. Without knowing the identity of her god, this so-called shrine maiden just jeopardize her ability to collect faith.
"This appears to be a very big scandal." Said Aya Shamemaru, a local reporter. "Shrine maiden not knowing god's identity is just a headline waiting to be written."
This shameful display of disregarding her duties is an insult to her ancestors and their sacrifice to protect the barrier of Gensokyo. Perhaps this explains the recent decline in the general quality of life for both Youkai and Humans. If the barrier is not protected, we could see the end of Gensokyo soon enough.
