Reimu Hakurei, the shrine maiden of the Hakurei shrine is actually a millionare.
The remote shrine on the faraway hills near the Human Village is in trouble. The shrine doesn't get much donations or visitors. The cause had been unknown for a while, but recently we have uncovered the true reason behind the lack of visitors.
"I have so much money, it scares away the worshippers." Said Reimu. "I wish I have less money so people would visit the shrine and donate for once. That way I can finally not be poor."
The Hakurei Shrine has a history that dates back hundreds of years. This lead to the shrine maiden uncovering treasure chests buried underneath the grounds. The money found made her a millionaire.
It is a proven fact that money correlates with the strength of faith. "Rich shrines have more god power." Said Professor Kourin, who specializes in faith research. "When people don't donate to your shrine, you become poor. Due to her incredible wealth, I expect the Hakurei Shrine to be stuck in perpetual poverty."
"I am a devout worshipper." said Tako Aki, a local villager in the human village. "However, I cannot bring myself to visit the Hakurei Shrine. Whenever I try to visit, I find myself waking in circles. I hope the shrine is doing ok without my donations."
The lack of money have already begun causing noticeable damage to the shrine. Wood is scientifically proven to not last forever, and the shrine is made of wood. Several parts of this wooden shrine is really old and needs replacing. If the shrine falls apart, the Great Hakurei border might fall too.
"I cannot get rid of my wealth. A shrine maiden is supposed to live a simple life, so I cannot spend my money." Reimu lamented. "I am stuck being a millionaire, so my shrine will continue to be poor."
In other news, the Moriya Shrine on top of Youkai Mountain is confirmed to have gods. Whether they are affected by the events in the Hakurei Shrine remains to be seen.
